COMMENT '56

Henry S.F. Cooper, Jr., Editor

Comment '56, our occasional Class Newsletter, is being reborn in electronic form as a page on the Class of 1956 web site!

Comment '56 was first published in October, 1972, four years before our 20th reunion; it ran for fifteen stupendous issues until it went into a lengthy nap in October, 1985, just before our 30th reunion. It has been reawakened, just before our 45th reunion, by the kiss of the Internet and dreams of becoming a hot dot com.

Its purpose, then and now, was to invite classmates to reminisce and to write about the frequently fascinating things they are doing. (Unsolicited manuscripts were and are always welcome, as well as anonymous tips about classmates who should be heard from.) Highlights from past issues included an article by Charlie Lord about how he switched careers from business to being a headmaster, by Ben Scotch about his migration to Vermont, and by Andrew Torchia about his time in one of Idi Amin's prisons. Then and now, the hope is to build up a picture of our class as it goes on through its life, working its way ever forward in the Class Notes section of the Yale Alumni Magazine. (Remember when we were at the end? One of these days, we'll be right up front.)

There will be differences between the new Comment '56 and the old. Due to the electronic medium, instead of coming out in periodic bursts known as individual issues, there will be a steady trickle on our web-site page, perhaps adding one article every month or so. But if we were good 20 years ago, we're even better now. Think how much wiser we are now than when we were still wet behind the ears! What does retirement do for some of us? Have others moved into new fields? Are grandchildren better than children?  Stay tuned. The best is yet to come.
